NEW DELHI: The BJP-led NDA which had made "abki baar 400-paarAbki baar 400-paar- Modi ji" its poll pitch for the Lok Sabha elections is hovering around the 300-mark with the the INDIA bloc putting up a very strong show in the key states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
In Uttar Pradesh, the INDIA bloc and the NDA are locked in a neck and neck fight with Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party making a strong comeback in the state. Congress is also making gains. The grand old party which had won just one seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, is ahead in 8 seats as of now.
Another key swing state for the INDIA bloc is Maharashtra where Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar have performed better than the party's breakaway factions giving the opposition MVA an edge over the BJP and its allies.
In Rajasthan also, the BJP is ahead only in 14 seats as of now. Congress has put up a strong show in the state and is leading in 8 seats. The BJP had won 24 out of the 25 seats in Rajasthan in 2019.
Polling for the 542 parliamentary constituencies took place in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. The Lok Sabha, comprising 543 seats, requires a party or coalition to secure at least 272 seats to form the government.
In the 2019 general elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 303 seats on its own, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) collectively won 353 seats. The Indian National Congress garnered 52 seats, and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) it led achieved 91 seats in total.
